The “3 sisters” evoke feminist sisterhood and solidarity, but also refer to an ancestral Mesoamerican cultivation method—La Milpa—where maize, beans, and squash grow together in mutual support. More than an agroecological practice, the Milpa is a web of relations among crops, people, and land.
Over centuries, the 3 sisters have traveled across bioregions, enriching diets and cultures. Yet colonialism and agribusiness imposed monocultures—on land and in minds—erasing diversity and severing symbiotic connections. Yellow corn became a global monocrop, replacing the many-colored indigenous maize varieties and their stories.
In 3 Sisters in AllerLand, we planted Blue Corn as a reminder of solidarity, diversity, and regenerative practices. This is not only a metaphor but an artistic method rooted in localisation and care, celebrating the diversity of the populations that live in this area of Graz. The installation grew in Gries-Graz for 2 summers, creating a vibrant space of transcultural and multigenerational conviviality, a shared garden and living room in the heart of gray, busy square.
